The session listing includes all the known commercial recordings, whether issued or not,
and radio transcription recordings which were for broadcast purposes only. Live radio
broadcasts taped 'off-air' and film soundtracks which were issued commercially are also
included.
In the left hand column are the matrix (master) numbers which are the record companies'
own internal 'catalogue' numbers.
They were usually allocated at the time the recording was made, so by arranging them in
numerical order, you can see which titles were cut at each session, and in what order.
The other headings are self-explanatory.
MATRIX TITLE RECORD COMPANY / LOCATION / DATE
AT THE START OF HIS RECORDING CAREER, GUY WAS SINGING UNDER HIS REAL
NAME OF AL CERNICK AS THE FEATURED VOCALIST WITH CARMEN CAVALLARO
AND HIS ORCHESTRA, WHICH IS WHY THE FIRST TWO SESSIONS WERE MADE
UNDER CARMEN CAVALLARO'S NAME.
CARMEN CAVALLARO AND HIS ORCHESTRA,
WITH VOCAL CHORUSES BY AL CERNICK
DECCA, LOS ANGELES, DECEMBER 17, 1947
L.4673 I GO IN WHEN THE MOON COMES OUT
L.4674 AH, BUT IT HAPPENS

L.4715 DREAM GIRL (Film : 'Dream Girl')
L.4716 EVELYN
L.4718 THE LITTLE OLD LADY OF THREADNEEDLE STREET (UNISSUED)
L.4719 ENCORE, CHERIE
NOTE: Matrix L.4717 is an instrumental, 'LA MER'('BEYOND THE SEA') issued in the U.K.
as 'THE SEA'.
The lack of recordings in 1948 is due to the American Federation of Musicians (AFM)
recording ban coming into force on January 1st. This meant that all musicians who were
members of the Federation (and most of them were) were unable to make commercial recordings
until the dispute between the AFM and the record companies was settled. Guy left Carmen
Cavallaro in June 1948 to pursue a solo career in New York, and after the recording ban
was lifted c. November-December, 1948, he was able to start making records again.

Ray Conniff's personal documentation says that these were "arrangements on

for Columbia Special Products for use in the 1956 Presidential election
campaign.

hour, and Russ Morgan and his Orchestra for the second hour, with Guy and
June Valli as the guest artists. We contacted Mr. Dell at the time but he

CO.62778 HEARTACHES BY THE NUMBER (Alternative take)
CO.62779 NOTIFY THE F.B.I.
CO.62780 TWO
NOTE: Different takes are identified by a take number which is suffixed to the matrix
number. Columbia could not supply the take numbers of 'HEARTACHES BY THE NUMBER' so we
have described them as 'Original' and 'Alternative' takes. The original take was issued in
mono only, but the alternative take has been issued in both mono and stereo.
The introductory whistling is quite different on the two takes, as is Guy's phrasing of
'Heartache number one ... '. On the original take, he emphasises the 'Heart' of 'Heartache'
much more than on the alternative take.
'NOTIFY THE F.B.I.' was unissued until 1990 when it appeared on a German Bear Family CD in
stereo.
'TWO' was originally issued in mono and stereo, using the same take.

CO.64544 THE SAME OLD ME (Alternative take)

CO.64546 CRY HURTIN' HEART
NOTE: The same situation applies to 'THE SAME OLD ME' as to 'Heartaches By The Number'
in the previous session. The original take was issued in mono only, but the alternative
take has been issued in both mono and stereo. Guy's phrasing of ' ... keeps loving you'
differs on the two takes, there is a female voice in the backing group which is more
evident on the alternative take than the original, and in the last three notes of the
whistling right at the end of the record, there is a distinct 'blip' in the alternative take
where one of the whistled notes seems to have been edited out. 'BUILD MY GALLOWS HIGH' and
'CRY HURTIN' HEART' were issued in mono only, but it is possible unissued stereo versions
exist.

'YOUR GOODNIGHT KISS' features Boots Randolph on saxophone, but he is given no label
credit.
The vocal group is believed to be the Anita Kerr Singers, but the Columbia files do not
confirm this. A 'CO' matrix usually denotes a New York recording, but this session was
made in Nashville at the Bradley Film and Recording Studios. The musicians on this
session included Grady Martin, Harold Bradley, Buddy Harman, Junior Huskey, Pete Drake,
Boots Randolph and Scotty Turner. This is a collective personnel, as not all of these
musicians played on every track; we do not have precise details of who is in the backing
group on each song.

what happened to their files and master tapes.

FUNNY THING ABOUT TIME (UNISSUED)
MY MELANCHOLY BABY (UNISSUED)
This session was produced by Jack Keller and Howard Greenfield. Arista Records Inc., who
subsequently owned the Colpix back catalogue, could not trace anything on Guy at all, so it
appears the master tapes may no longer exist. The session details were supplied by Jack
Keller and Alan Lorber.
As far as we know, Guy did not make any new records in 1964, the first year he missed doing
so since 1948. A report appeared in the U.K. 'New Musical Express' on September 25, 1964
which said: 'Guy Mitchell is working on a comeback. Assisting him are two of Eddie Fisher's
veteran aides, Bernie Rich and Bob Abrams'.
Guy toured the U.K. Northern Club circuit in February 1965, and the next record session we
are aware of is the following :
WITH VOCAL CHORUS AND INSTRUMENTAL ACCOMPANIMENT
CHALICE, NORTH HOLLYWOOD, c.JULY 1965

CR.303 MISTER HOBO

CR.305-X TAKE YOUR TIME [Vocal Chorus Omitted]
CR.306-X IF THE GOOD LORD'S WILLIN'
CR.307-XX YOUR IMAGINATION
CR.308 BIT OF LOVE [Vocal Chorus Omitted]
This session was produced by Carl Ryan Chandler and associate producer Dean Preston. The
exact studio location isn't known. The Chalice Music Co. at some time sold the above seven
master tapes to de Silva Productions of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The files relating to the
session seem to have been lost or destroyed, but we know that 'MY ANGEL', 'MISTER HOBO',
'YOU CAN'T HURT ME ANY MORE' and 'YOUR IMAGINATION' were registered with Broadcast Music
Inc. (BMI) for copyright purposes on July 31, 1965, so it seems a fair assumption that the
recording session took place about the same time. According to the record labels,
'TAKE YOUR TIME', 'IF THE GOOD LORD'S WILLIN'' and 'BIT OF LOVE' were also registered with
BMI, but the copyright dates for these could not be traced.

The above seven Reprise masters were acquired by de Silva Productions of Calgary, Alberta,
Canada in 1980. The four issued titles were all produced by Jimmy Bowen.
We shall probably never know the exact recording dates of the next five sessions as,
incredibly, they were not noted in the Starday files. A promo 45 of 'Traveling shoes' has
been seen, giving the release date as September 1967. Alternative takes were not documented
by Starday either, although some were issued as noted below.

Guy came to the U.K. in the autumn of 1968, initially for a tour of U.S. Air Force bases.
He decided to stay, and lived and worked in the U.K. for the next two years. A report
appeared in the 'New Musical Express' of May 24, 1969 ... 'Under a new Decca contract he
(Guy) will record 'London's got me laughing again' next week for release shortly'. 'Decca'
refers to the Decca Record Co. Ltd., London, but both they and Guy have confirmed that the
session never took place.
Guy left the U.K. in the autumn of 1970 and went to South Africa. We do not know how long
he stayed there, but he eventually returned to the U.S.A, and the next record session we
are aware of is the following :
WITH INSTRUMENTAL ACCOMPANIMENT, PRODUCED BY BABY RAY
MONETA, LOCATION UNKNOWN, 1972
BR.501 THAT'S MY HEART (YOU'RE WALKING ON)
BR.502 SHE'S BACK
These two titles didn't come to light until 1995 by which time Moneta Records of Kagel
Canyon, California, had gone out of business. The recording year is based on the fact that
both songs were registered with BMI for copyright purposes in 1972, and were new songs
when Guy recorded them. Baby Ray is, in fact, Ray Eddlemon who co-wrote both songs.

The matrix numbers are as shown on the records. Matrix numbers usually follow a regular
numerical sequence, so it may be that the above are not true matrix numbers but some form
of control numbers used by Gold Star Studios. Further recording took place in September
1974, and the final mix and initial pressings were made on January 23, 1975. 'I'm broke,
but not busted' was originally titled 'Learned to love again' and was re-recorded on
July 17, 1986 as 'Broke but not busted'. 'Heaven Knows, I Love You' was re-recorded on
July 9, 1986 with the title shortened to 'Heaven knows'.
FROM THIS POINT, MATRIX NUMBERS ARE NO LONGER ALLOCATED TO INDIVIDUAL SONG TITLES.
Guy went back to his first love, ranching, for the next few years, then in the late
1970s/early 1980s the K-Tel Record Company embarked on a series of stereo re-creations
of 1950s hits by the original artists, and they contracted Guy for the following session :
WITH VOCAL CHORUS AND INSTRUMENTAL ACCOMPANIMENT
K-TEL, NASHVILLE, JUNE 1980
HEARTACHES BY THE NUMBER
KNEE DEEP IN THE BLUES
ROCK-A-BILLY
SINGING THE BLUES
K-Tel are based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They could not supply the name of the studio
used for this session, nor the precise recording date.
K-Tel have leased the above recordings out to various record companies worldwide through
a number of intermediary licensing companies. The licensing companies shown on the records
issued to date are:
Aloha Island Masters Kilo Music Ltd.

Apart from 'Music! Music! Music!' and 'Side by side' which Guy had never commercially
recorded before, the other titles are all stereo re-creations of his hits, using backing
arrangements reminiscent of the originals. Triad International Productions were based in
Brentwood, Tennessee, and a letter to them asking for the session dates was returned by
the U.S. Post Office marked 'Forwarding order expired'. The Audio Media Studios have since
changed their name to the Javelina Recording Studios, and no reply was received to
correspondence addressed to them requesting session dates.
At some stage, the above Triad master tapes were apparently sold to Volker Spielberg
Musikverlag, Hamburg, Germany, who, like K-Tel, have leased them out to numerous record
companies through various intermediaries. The licensing companies shown on the records
issued to date are:
Arcade Records (Benelux) Orcan Licensing Ltd.
Coombe Music International Ltd. Ridgetop Music
Hal Shaper Ltd (HSL) Sound and Music Promotions Ltd.
Lollipop Music S.A, (Spain) SPA
Long Island Music Co. Ltd. TKO Records Ltd.
Musicrent Inc. Dave Travis
Newsound 2000 Ltd. VS Musikverlag
As there are similarities between the 1980 K-Tel and 1982 Triad recordings, we hope the
information on the licensing companies will help to distinguish between them.

The above four sessions were recorded in Scotland for Guy's appearance in the BBC
Television series 'YOUR CHEATIN' HEART'. Guy played a character called 'JIM BOB O'MAY' and
his backing group were 'THE WILD BUNCH'. When BBC Records issued the album and single from
the series, they rather strangely listed the artists under the names of the characters they
played in the series, instead of the artists' real names!
Only those titles designated 'ALBUM TRACK' above were intended for commercial release. The
other recordings made during this production are listed merely for the sake of completeness.
