Tribute to Jim Smith by Les Peckham

Jim Smith

1/8/1937 - 3/7/2006
by Les Peckham

" It is with much regret that our computer expert Jim Smith, has died at the age of 68. Jim had been ill for some time and he sadly passed away on 3rd July 2006.

" The above picture of Jim is from the mid 1950's shortly after starting his vast collection of Guy Mitchell records. In March 1983, Jim placed the following advert in Vintage Record Mart and, in no time at all, he was contacted and informed about the existence of the Guy Mitchell Appreciation Society. As a result, he became an early member of the Society.

" As time progressed, it became clear that Jim was an expert in the use of computers and he showed considerable interest in the possibility of setting up a Guy Mitchell web site page. The Society was most fortunate to have such an enthusiastic expert in this field as it was clear that no one else had the knowledge to even think of such a project. Fortunately, by about 1998, Jim was able to set up a web site that has become the envy of all other societies. The Guy Mitchell web site is now the most comprehensive source of Guy's recording career. The site contains Derek Beeby's full discography of Guy's recordings, information about Guy's movies, over 33 pages of Guy's links to other artists and literally hundreds of superb pictures of Guy. Jim's site is the first place you will find information about Guy's CD releases and often the first place that viewers learn of the existence of our Society. Over 39,000 visitors have viewed this vast amount of information.

" The following picture of Jim was taken over 45 years after the earlier one and he was still collecting Guy Mitchell records. In addition to Guy, Jim also has comprehensive web sites for June Christy and Jan Holly and there are links to other Appreciation Society web sites.

" The Society was represented at the funeral by Derek Beeby, Allan Rabone and George Howell.
There is no doubt that Jim was a most important member of this Society and a valuable member of the Committee.
He will be greatly missed and we send our sincere condolences to his wife, Elizabeth, and to all the family. "
